The Munford Police Department is fortunate to have a Canine Program. The canine program is an old, but new program for the department. Times and belief of the people often effect the way the policing is done. Currently the police are very aggressive on the detection of illegal drugs in our city, and the prosecution of those found to have illegal drugs. The asset of a trained canine team to detect illegal drugs saves time and money. A trained canine team can detect odors that an officer may not smell and often find illegal drugs in hidden compartments in vehicles and buildings that may be missed by the officer.

Munford´s canine, Roukie, was received from North Mississippi K9 Services. Roukie has been titled in the French Ring prior to the city receiving him, and was imported from France to the USA for Police work. Roukie is a Fawn colored Belgian Malinois born in Oct. 2000. Munford’s canine handler is Ernesto Byrd.  Officer Byrd has been a member of the Dept. since 2005.  Officer Byrd received his state certification from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy. He also received certification in special weapons and tactics, and is an active member of the Munford S.W.A.T. Team.  Roukie has been with the Munford Police Department since November 2002.  Officer Byrd and Roukie were teamed up in February 2007. They continue to work toward the detection and prosecution of those found to have illegal drugs and crimes associated with illegal drugs.

French Ring Dogs are the Elite of the Elite. The French Trainers have designed a training regiment that is both fun and very demanding on a dog.
