On the evening of May 16, the City of Munford and Tipton County received an unprecedented amount of rainfall, resulting in the flooding of several areas.  Adversity seems to always exhibit character.  I would like to commend our Fire and Rescue team for their courageous work in assisting those in danger.  Our people were out in full-force, assisting people stranded on the road, in homes and businesses.  The loss of property was great, but there was no loss of life.  For this, we are thankful.  All of our departments responded to this emergency and worked tirelessly until the danger had passed.  I would like to also commend our Law Enforcement Officers and Public Utilities Workers for their help in this situation.  I personally observed every department working together to meet the challenge.

As a result of much effort on behalf of our citizens, the Flood of May 16 was declared a Federal Disaster, thereby making Federal assistance available to those affected and eligible.  I would like to particularly thank Tricia Miller, Tipton County Emergency Management Coordinator for her work in gathering information and submitting our request to the Governor, and to governor Bredesen for forwarding it on to President Bush.   Speaker of the House Jimmy Naifeh, State Senator Mark Norris, and Representative Delores Gresham all worked on our behalf in this effort and expressed genuine concern for those affected. Your Aldermen, County Executive Jeff Huffman and many more people were involved in this effort.  To all of those, I say thank you.

It is my understanding that FEMA will now take the lead role in the administration of available assistance.
